Wallbanks in Slaidburn, West Riding of Yorkshire.

The township of Slaidburn is in the Staincliffe Warpentake of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It lies north of the Ribble about 15 miles north of Blackburn. The village of Newton lies within Slaidburm Parish.

I am indebted to Chris Spencer for information on the Slaidburn Wallbanks. Chris is a local historian who has transcribed and compiled court rolls, parish registers and wills of the area. For a list of his publications go here.

Wallbanks in Slaidburn Manor Court Rolls

The following is from Chris Spencer's yet unpublished transcriptions of the Manor of Slaidburn court rolls.

The 1392/93 roll has a Wallbank entry (in Latin) as follows:

3 Feb 1392/93

'John son and heir of John Walbonk complains against William Walbonk in a plea of detinue of land, in that he unjustly detains one messuage and 11 acres of land with the appurtenances in Heghfeld in Sleytburn, of which John, the father of him the plaintiff, died seised, according to custom' [etc ... more follows - appears to say that a proclamation was made 3 times in court, but neither he, the plaintiff, nor anyone else came to make the fine, and so the messuage was demised to him, the defendant.]

Lancashire Record Office ref: DDHCI/Slaidburn /Roll1/1392-93

Chris Spencer summarises:

John Wallbank senior (father) dies and his eldest son, John, should have inherited his copyhold lands of the Manor of Slaidburn, lying in Highfield (still there today), but for some unknown reason, John W junior fails to claim the land by not appearing at the Manorial Court, and so the court awarded the lands to John W senior's second son, William. Perhaps John W junior had been living out of the area? Anyhow, John W junior then tries to get his rightful inheritance, but it's too late, and he is amerced (fined) for a false claim or suit in court.

Wallbank Quakers in Newton

Later in the 17th century Wallbanks appear in the Bolland Quaker Registers (Settle Monthly Meeting). A Wallbank gave a small piece of land for a Quaker burial ground. It is still there today about 50m from the former Quaker meeting rooms. No Wallbank memorials survive.
